The Need
According to the National Center for the Missing, Exploited Children (NCMEC) there will be approximately 58,000 non-family abductions this year.
There will be over 200,000 family abductions this year.
One out of five girls and one out of every ten boys will be sexually abused before they reach adulthood.
Experts estimate that 60 million adults today were sexually abused when they were children.
Over 800,000 children will be reported missing this year alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will the video scare my child/Will my child be able to understand it?
A. The video is designed to address a child on a level that they can understand. The video will be fun and entertaining utilizing martial arts demonstrations and scenario teaching methods.
Q. I have visited other web sites that deal with child safety, how is your program different?
A. Safety NET Kids is unique in that it is a program designed to prevent abductions and abuse. Most programs available today are more focused on public awareness as opposed to training children to be more prepared for the dangers that face them. Additionally, our video program gives a level of reinforcement not available anywhere else.
Q. Should I have my child fingerprinted? What benefit would there be, or in what negative way could it be used?
A. Yes! We recommend that you find a reputable agency that protects your privacy. Should your child be abducted, the information provided can be used to positively identify your child in a search. A reputable agency would not share the information that you provide with other unrelated organizations. We suggest contacting www.safekidscard.com to get a CD ID with digital fingerprint for your child.
Q. What should I do if my child has already been abducted or abused?
A. While our focus is on prevention, there are agencies that can assist you in the event that your child has already been abducted or abused. We recommend using your favorite search engine to find the proper authorities or agencies near you.
Q. How can I find out if there is a known predator (convict) in my neighborhood? What is Megan's Law?
A. The Klaas Foundation has provided valuable information regarding Megan's Law and we also suggest you become familiar with the Amber Alert system. Also see our links page for the Arizona Department of Public Safety - Sex Offender InfoCenter.
Q. I have had numerous sessions with my children about the dangers of dealing with strangers. Isn't that enough?
A. No. Because this issue needs constant reinforcement, it is important for kids to hear from an expert in this field. Just as the police officer gives weight to the issues addressed through the D.A.R.E. program. Nearly all parents talk to their children about drugs, but it is when this issue is described in detail through the local Sheriff's Departments that the kids get a real feel for the dangers. In areas where this program is not available or not used for whatever reason, teenage drinking and drug abuse are on the rise. Another example would be that as many times as we stress to our children the important of fire safety, the most powerful instruction often comes from a fireman!
Q. Are there situations that might put some children more at risk than others? What are they?
A. Yes. If your child lives in a heavily populated area, they may be at a higher risk. Also, if you have different people picking up your children from school, they may be more likely to go along with any one that says they are there to pick them up. There are many situations that may increase the risk that your child will be targeted and we address those situation at length in the video. Our motto is: No abductions, no abuse, no easy targets!
Q. My child has been harassed at school and in our neighborhood by bullies. Will your video address this type of situation?
A. The confidence issues addressed in this first video will certainly help. This issue will be addressed more specifically in our next upcoming video.
Q. Does my child need to be in some type of karate class to use the techniques you use in your video?
A. Not necessarily, although a good martial arts program such as that provided through the American Taekwondo Association and Pak's ATA Black Belt Academy that is specifically geared towards the needs and abilities of children, will instill confidence and a great sense of awareness in children. |
