FREE SAFETY TIPS
Arizona is the leading state in kidnapping for ransom and second only to Mexico City. With these statistics continuing to grow at an alarming rate it is important for parents and adults to review the following Safety Tips Check List.
For Children
• Make sure your child knows the difference between a Stranger and a Bad Guy. There are too many programs out there that only teach “stranger danger” telling children that all strangers are “bad”. Recent studies have shown that as many as 85% of children who have been victimized by pedophiles knew the “bad guy”.
• Create a “Magic Word”. This is useful at any age. Make sure you run a field test with your child to ensure they understand how to use it.
• Teach your child about “Road Safety”. How to cross streets, looking both ways etc.
• Have a Fire Escape Plan and practice it every month. Make sure you include a pre-decided “safety tree”.
• If going to a theme park or water park and there is a potential that your child could become separated from you, take a quick “group” photo with your cell phone so that if needed you can show the park staff a current photo of your child.
For Adults.
• Make sure at least 2 people know where you are, whether you are traveling (give them contact information) or just running errands. This can be as simple as calling a friend before you leave the house, mentioning what you are wearing and where all of your errands are located at, and what time you should be getting home.
• Be alert in parking lots this means do not talk on your cell phone.
• Always carry your keys in your hand.
• If a stranger seems abnormally interested in you, it is just that, abnormal. Trust your instinct and do not share any identifying information. Call a friend.
• Be aware of people who approach asking for the time or directions. Maintain a polite but safe distance away.
